It is Wednesday and time for another version of my “What I Ate Wednesday” (WIAW). Today, it will feature all of my food from yesterday: the healthy, the yummy and the…. dessert. This is a true picture into what I eat in a day: I don’t change my eating for the day, I don’t cook something different and I simply give you a peak to what my eating looks like in a day. Some days might be cleaner than others and some days may have more food than others. At 37 weeks pregnant, my nutrition is truly hit or miss; I try to keep it as healthy as possible, but some days I am just not feeling all the veggies.
When I sit down to write these posts, I usually keep my window open and just document my food throughout the day. I am going to be real with you here: I haven’t been eating much lately. The only reason I will probably have a full dinner is because we have a guest over. Full disclosure, Monday night I ate two bites of meat for dinner, gave it to my husband and made myself an ice cream cone instead- that was my dinner.
Yesterday my goal was to eat more and especially to eat more protein. I have not been eating very much lately because I am simply not hungry or there is no room. After looking over today’s eats, I feel like it was actually more food than I have been eating lately, which is good!
5:20: wake up & drink water
Each day I wake up and drink my lemon water before anything else. In my cup goes a half a lemon, water and gelatin. Great way to start my day. After I chugged that it was off to teach a park workout.
7:30: Post Workout Coffee
I may have been sweating after my workout, but I came in and immediately enjoyed a hot cup of coffee. I drink my coffee black.
8am: Breakfast
If you have been around here for awhile, you know that my normal breakfast usually consists of eggs and oatmeal and today was no different. I made 1/3 cup of rolled oats with some almond butter and blueberries and ate just one egg. I usually eat 2 eggs and 2 egg whites, but I just couldn’t do it.
11:10am: Snack
Of course by 11 I already failed at my “eat more protein” goal. I came home from running some errands and dug into a half of an apple and a piece of bread topped with natural peanut butter. I guess the peanut butter had a little protein, but I consider it a fat. After I snapped a pic, devoured my snack, I made a second piece of toast with peanut butter (and ate it too fast to take a picture).
1:10: Lunch
That snack kept me hungry until it was time for me to go get my munchkins and I realize I had a snack, but no real lunch. I am usually one who likes to eat or chew my meals, but lately I have been making a smoothie to help with my protein since I haven’t been feeling like eating a lot. I made a quick smoothie: strawberries, raspberries, almond milk, a scoop of vanilla protein powder and ice- it was refreshing! Then I also had a piece of cheese.
6:30: Snacking while cooking
We were having a guest over for dinner so dinner was a little later tonight. While I cooked dinner I snacked on a couple handfuls of grapes and then a few several pretzels dipped in hummus.
8:00: Dinner
A much later dinner than normal, I ate half of a mozzarella stuffed bruschetta turkey burger, 2 servings of sweet potato fries and grilled zucchini. The sweet potato fries hit the spot, and the burger was delicious but of course I could only eat half. I was full, but not too full for dessert.
9:10: Dessert
Since we had a dinner guest, it was national Strawberry Shortcake Day, and I know my days of eating dairy are numbered we dug into some yummy strawberry shortcake once our food settled. YUM! I love that dessert.
Of course throughout the day I drank water with lemon all day. I tried to count the number of ounces and I lost track at about 180. I am assuming I got in almost 2 gallons of water yesterday. I also usually chug water when I wake up in the middle of the night due to third trimester insomnia.
I didn’t get as much protein as I wanted to, but I am proud for eating a lot more than I have been lately. Although I had dessert, I felt like my choices the rest of the day were solid- it is all about balance. Eating well 80% of the time allows me to enjoy a sweet treat often without over indulging.
