Why do weekends always go so fast? We had such a great weekend with family and some very dear friends- I hated to see it go. It is not every weekend that I get to spend it with my family and some of my closest friends and I really cherish those moments.
Halloween
After a long week of travel, Josh was able to sneak out of the office a little early on Friday to run some errands and get home. That meant I was able to go out for a kid-free run before it was time to get dinner ready and put on our Halloween gear.
Claire had been asking all week to put on her costume. My mother-in-law made her Minnie Mouse costume for her and I found the ears at Target- they matched perfectly! I know I am biased, but Minnie & Mr. Football are quite cute.
Although it was cold and rainy, we braved the conditions and headed down our street. I wasn’t sure if Claire would get into the trick or treating or not, but she did. She loved knocking on the door and after a few houses would even say, “trick or treat”.
Marathon Saturday
Saturday was race day for Josh, Papaw Thom and our friend, Adam. Josh & Adam did the half marathon and Thom completed his first marathon! I had all intentions of going downtown with the kiddos to cheer on some of our favorite runners, but when I found out it was only going to be 30 degrees at start time, I decided to stay home. Christina and Adam came in from Milwaukee for the weekend. Christina is my best friend from college and we had this visit planned for some time. When I told her Josh was running the half, her husband decided he would do it too. I love that our husbands get along so well. Christina, her mom and my mom stayed downtown to cheer on the guys. Everyone ran a great race, especially given the temperature.
After the half marathoners completed their race, everyone headed back to our house for lunch.. and baseball in the house. I guess that is what happens when your Grammy comes to visit. Although I wasn’t too mad about it because she was making good ball contact!
The afternoon was spent relaxing and napping. Josh was able to get some after-race snuggles with his favorite little man.
Saturday Evening Relaxation
My how the times have changed! It used to be when our friends came to visit we’d have big plans for dinner and going out after- not anymore. I love that Christina and Adam were completely okay for just hanging out at our house. It is not often that we get to see them, so it was good to just be with them.
Our evening was spent in good conversation, a few beers, watching football, and cooking dinner. Claire helped me make some delicious avocado hummus while Josh prepared his infamous ribs that were delicious.
By stern request from Josh, my mom was to make scotcharoos. If you have never had these peanut buttery, rice krispie treat topped with chocolate and butterscotch, you are missing out. There is nothing “good for you” about these, but they are yummy. My mom decided she would teach Christina how to partake in our favorite family treat.
After dinner we were all stuffed and tried our best to stay up for the Notre Dame game, but everyone headed to bed at half time- my how times have changed.
A Sunday Birthday Party
That extra hour of “sleep” doesn’t really exist when you have young children, but it was nice to have an “extra” hour to hang out, drink coffee and enjoy breakfast with our guests before they all left.
We spent the afternoon with some more great friends celebrating the birthdays of two special munchkins. The kiddos played, the adults watched football, and Max just took it all in and grinned. Claire thought these glasses were quite funny.
After the party, it was an earned nap time. Claire napped, Max napped, I napped… and Josh raked leaves. I had planned on going for a long run while the kids were napping, but I think I am coming down with something and really needed to sleep. I usually don’t skip my workouts, but I had to listen to my body this time. I will be ready to get back to the gym after a weekend of too many indulgences- I am pretty sure my 80-20 turned to 60-40 this weekend. All the “bad for me” food exited my house last night.
It was such a wonderful weekend with some of my most favorite people. In general, I just love the weekends. Our weekdays are so busy and I really cherish the moments we all get to be together during the weekend.
Your turn- tell me!
What was the highlight of your weekend?
What is your favorite thing to do when you have guests visit?

when guests come we like to cook a meal and by request I try to include at least 1 of the favorite food items of the guests that will be at the meal. If it is warm swim in our pool, share memories, and play spoons. Thank you for sharing your blog.

I love hosting guests! We don’t have a lot of out of town friends but I love cooking
Our weekend was full of raking leaves, cleaning out the chicken coop, and relaxing! Lou loved trick or treating too. The 5 houses we went to! She loved running from
House to house yelling “treat or trick” :-))

You are lucky most of your friends are near- we have a lot of friends that live far away plus our family.
