It is almost May and in Indiana that means there are several half marathons within driving distance in the month of May. This weekend will be one of the biggest half marathons around and will kick of racing month in Indiana. The Indianapolis half marathon (I got chills typing that) kicks off the festivities for the Indianapolis 500.
Although I don’t consider myself a runner and just more of a fitness-er, I love the hype that comes with a big race and the community that comes together. The Indianapolis Half Marathon is where my love for running began and about a week and a half ago, after a great race in Carmel, I decided I would go back to my roots and run it. It has been 5 years since I have run this race and I am excited to go back and complete my 10th half marathon!
No better way to celebrate my 10th half marathon then to share my running favorites:
Shoes: The Saucony Ride is my go-to shoe for running! I don’t even have to try them on anymore, I just go to the running store, ask for my size and pay. In 2010 I went to the Blue Mile and had them fit me for a shoe and I haven’t changed since. I recommend this service that many running stores offer.
Socks- I love Gizmo running socks. My mom bought me a pair of these at my first-ever half marathon. I still have them (and several other pairs) and I wear the same pink pair of Gizmo running socks to every race. Yes, there is a little bit of superstition there.
Sports Bra- I never used to be picky about sports bras until I started nursing because I didn’t need to be picky (insert speculations here). This Champion Show Off sports bra is the best I have found for the price.
Running Top- I don’t really have a favorite top anymore. I used to love the Lululemon “Cardio Kick” tank that they no longer sell, but two weeks ago when I ran that half marathon I chafed on my back pretty badly. I guess I am on the hunt for a new go-to tank for long races. This is still my favorite for shorter runs and other workouts.
Wearing Lululemon Cardio Kick tank and Run Speed shorts.
Shorts/ Pants- I have several pairs of running shorts, but I am a creature of habit and I wear the same shorts for every race. These Lululemon Run Speed shorts are the best shorts I have found. They are the perfect length, are not too baggy or too tight and are just downright awesome. I don’t have a favorite pair of long pants and wear something different every time I run in the cold.
Pre Race Meal- No question here: oatmeal, strawberries and chocolate chips… before every race!
Post Race Meal– EVERYTHING! Yes, especially if it is a long race, I like to eat everything. I always look forward to the post race cookies and then brunch at a local restaurant after. If I have gone for a long training run I like to have a donut after.
Race- My favorite race is the Fort 4 Fitness: a half marathon in my hometown. I love the course, the weather is always perfect and finishing on a baseball field diamond is pretty awesome.
Distance- It is a toss up between the half marathon and the 10k. I like that I can always run a 10k pretty fast with relative ease and it doesn’t require me to train. The half marathon atmosphere is just awesome. I don’t like the marathon.
Fuel- I am not one to use gels, beans, or really anything during races. When I did run a full marathon I had to: I liked raisins and fig newtons.
I am a creature of habit. I like to wear and use what makes me comfortable. It has taken years for me to find my favorites and there are some things I am still hoping to find a favorite. If you are running this weekend, next or are thinking about running, try out one of my favorite items and let me know what you think. If not an apparel item, go for the donut or cookie after your next run: everything in moderation, people.
Your turn- tell me!
What is one of your running favorites?
Give me a good running top to try out, ladies?
I’d love to hear your favorite post race eats!
